"Itsbynne Reel" (1989)
by Michael Brecker and Don Grolnick

Michael Brecker: Tenor Saxophone and Akai EWI
Mike Stern: Guitar
Don Grolnick: Piano
Charlie Haden: Acoustic Bass
Jeff Andrews: Fretless Electric Bass
Jack DeJohnette: Drums
Mark OConnor: Violin

This selection displays the use of a wind controller (Akai EWI) capable of playing any of the settings available to keyboard synthesizers. It is played like a saxophone and capable of breath accents and articulations. The opening duet that sounds like traditional bluegrass features Brecker on EWI and Mark O'Connor on violin. Mike Stern on guitar is representative of the strong influence of rock soloing styles. All the musicians have virtuoso technique and perform together in a highly improvisational relationship. Their communication is extraordinary and very responsive to the soloist. Their ability to improvise large architectural solos is truly remarkable. The rhythmic patterns supporting the texture is a hybrid of rock and jazz elements. The fusion of the two styles is complete.
